Artist Spotlight: Doc Coyle of God Forbid
This versatile guitarist stays true to his metal roots, and stays loyal to ESP.

It must be nice being Doc Coyle. First, youʼd be a respected metal guitarist around the world, so that wouldnʼt suck. Second, youʼd get to rock with one of the great “New Wave of American Heavy Metal” bands, God Forbid. And finally, youʼd be flexible enough to jump into yet another great band -- Lamb of God -- to substitute for Mark Morton while opening for Metallica on tour.

Letʼs back up a step, though. Doc and his bandmates started God Forbid back in 1996, and took the rough road to success, via constant touring, recording, and gaining fans one person at a time. Through the late ʻ90s, they were able to hook up on tours with with bands like GWAR and Cradle of Filth, and by the time their first full-length album hit, theyʼd already developed a good-sized fan base, especially around their hometown area of Northern New Jersey/New York. Subsequently signing to Century Media, Doc and God Forbid kicked out another couple of albums, and did tours with bands including Shadows Fall and Lamb of God. Their 2004 appearance on Ozzfest also added to their nationwide recognition factor. 2005 saw God Forbid making the Billboard charts for the first time with their album “IV: Constitution of Treason”.

Somebody Get Me A Doc(tor)!
Fast forward to 2009, which has been a particularly busy one for Doc. God Forbid released their fifth album, Earthsblood, in February, and the band joined the No Fear Energy Music Tour along with Children of Bodom, As I Lay Dying and others. In the summertime, God Forbid hit the Rockstar Mayhem festival along with Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine, Slayer, and the rest. While most guys would want to rest up after such a busy year, Doc instead accepted an invitation from his buddies in Lamb of God, and has joined them in their opening slots, playing alongside his bro Willie Adler and filling in for Mark Morton (who is taking some well-deserved time off to be with his wife and their first child).

Even after he wraps that tour up, Docʼs planning on taking God Forbid out on the road yet again later this year. Good thing Doc has been a loyal player of ESP since the beginning, since all that touring needs a guitar that can sound great despite the rigors of the road. Doc started in God Forbid playing Eclipse models, including the affordable LTD EC series, and has since employed several ESP models, including a James Hetfield signature guitar and a custom 7-string LTD H-series model.
