SON partner Werner's 'permanent move' could be Champions League ticket?

Timo Werner (28, Tottenham) is keen to make a permanent move to Tottenham, but his future will be determined by the club's ability to compete in the 'War of the Stars'.

British outlet 'The Hardtackle' reported on Feb. 22 (KST), "Werner wants to stay at Tottenham. Werner's permanent move will depend on whether Spurs qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season. This will put a lot of pressure on Werner (who must perform well) for the rest of the season."

With 10 games remaining in the 2023-2024 English Premier League (EPL) season, Spurs are in fifth place in the table, behind Aston Villa (56 points), who have played one more game. Spurs are looking to move up a spot. The results of their remaining matches will determine who will qualify for the next Champions League, which is awarded to the top four teams.

Tottenham's realistic goal is to finish in the 'big four'. After that, they want to have a strong preseason to start next season.

Tottenham signed Werner on loan from RB Leipzig (Germany) on January 10th. His contract runs until the end of the season and includes an option to buy (£15 million, $25.4 million). Tottenham's expectations from him are one of one thing. His ability to play both up front and on the wing means he can fill in when others in his position are out injured. If he fills in efficiently, Spurs will likely pull out the permanent signing card.

It will be interesting to see if Spurs will keep Werner despite his 'lack of finishing'.

Werner made a ridiculous mistake in the 29th round of the 2023-2024 EPL away match against Fulham on October 17th. He was unable to prevent his team from a goalless defeat. Tottenham lost 0-3.

Werner was unable to find the back of the net in the 23rd minute of the second half. Brennan Johnson's cross from the right flank went past both the Fulham defense and the goalkeeper. The goal was empty. 스포츠토토 Werner had a golden opportunity to score, but he couldn't get the ball on his left foot. The ball sailed wide left of the goal.

"Werner missed a big chance," said the British publication Football London. Johnson's pass across the face of goal was headed away. He played with commitment, but it was a terrible shot," giving him the lowest rating of three.

Werner has EPL experience, but it doesn't seem to be working to his advantage. He hasn't been able to erase his poor goal scoring rating.

In the past, Werner was at Chelsea, but he didn't have much success.

He caught the eye of Chelsea after a stellar spell with Leipzig between 2016 and 2020. The transfer was successful. Chelsea bought him for £45 million in the summer of 2020.

However, Werner's form has been less than stellar as time has gone on. He was quickly thrust into the first-team, but his poor decision-making and numerous offside penalties have been criticized. Although he did win the Champions League with Chelsea, his impact was limited.

His second year at Chelsea was no better. Werner was relegated to the bench in the 2021-2022 season, scoring just four goals and providing one assist in the league. He ended up returning to Leipzig in the summer of 2022 with a disappointing 23 goals in 89 official games. His transfer fee was reduced to €30 million within two years.

Werner was never the same player for his hometown club. After a strong 2022-2023 season in which he scored nine goals and provided three assists in 27 league games, his form took a dip in the 2023-2024 season. By December of last year, he had scored just two goals in 14 games. He was relegated to the backup role.

In the meantime, Werner has also fallen out of favor with the German national team. He has played 57 times for the national team, but hasn't made an appearance since March of last year against Belgium. He's in desperate need of playing time if he wants to make it to UEFA Euro 2024 in his native Germany in June.

Tottenham, looking for a striker with experience at the right price, approached Werner and a loan move was agreed as the needs of the two clubs were aligned. However, it remains unclear whether Spurs will play the 'permanent signing' card.

In the meantime, Werner wants to stay at Tottenham. The £15 million option to buy must reportedly be activated before the start of Euro 2024.

British outlet Gibme Sports broke the news on July 22nd.

"Enzi Postecoglou believes that if Werner doesn't make the German squad for Euro 2024, it would be a good thing for Tottenham," Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge explained to Gibme Sports.

Bridge added: "£15 million is not a lot of money (for Tottenham in the transfer market). Tottenham will consider keeping him permanently. I don't think Werner will be in the Euro2024 squad, which is a big blow for him, but if he wants to stay at Tottenham, (missing out) could be good for him. He will be able to attend Tottenham's pre-season. At the moment, no decision has been made (about his future). But if he contributes to Tottenham until the end of the season, a permanent move is not out of the question."

Earlier, Fabrizio Romano, who is well versed in the European transfer market, also had some positive news. "Tottenham are happy that Werner has started to build a (good) relationship with the players, both on and off the pitch. The club is happy with him."

More important to Tottenham than Werner's permanent move is ensuring they can qualify for the Champions League next season. Other than that, the club is expected to be able to afford the deal.
